How is Hemp CBD Flower Weighed and Measured?

When buying hemp CBD flower, it’s important to understand how it is weighed and measured so you know how much hemp CBD you’re getting. 

Traditionally, hemp CBD flower and Cannabis flower are measured the same ways--in ounces and grams using the metric system. Of course, there are also fractional terms like “an eighth,” “a quarter” and “a half” that are frequently used in both industries. And to make things a little more complicated, “an eighth” does not equate exactly to an eighth of an ounce.

How Many Grams in an Ounce?

When it comes to weighing and measuring hemp CBD flower, it’s crucial to know how grams translate into ounces, as both are used to describe amounts of flower. 

The first thing to remember is that a gram is less than an ounce. To put it in perspective, a paper clip weighs about a gram while a slice of wholegrain bread weighs about an ounce. To be specific, there are 28.34952 grams in an ounce. 

For first time buyers or light smokers, it might be best to purchase just one gram to see how you like it. It’s also important to note that many hemp CBD pre-rolls come out to exactly one gram.

How Many Grams in an Eighth?

Many people purchase hemp CBD flower in an eighth. It’s the perfect amount for regular customers, especially if you want to try out a few different strains. 

Technically, there are 3.54688 grams in an eighth. However, that is typically rounded to 3.5 grams. Other measurements (a quarter and a half) are based off of this rounded number.

How Many Grams in a Quarter? 

There are 2 eighths in a quarter, which equates to 7 grams of hemp CBD flower.

How Many Grams of CBD in a Half?

If you’re buying a “half” of hemp CBD flower, you should receive 14 grams of product. This is equivalent to 4 eighths.

How Many Ounces in a Pound of Hemp CBD Flower?

For those who smoke hemp CBD daily or bake with hemp CBD flower, it might make more sense to buy hemp CBD flower in larger amounts. You can purchase CBD flower in increments of pounds, if you want to. 

One pound weighs 16 ounces. This translates to 448 grams (or 128 eighths!).
